LE FIL D'ARIANE
In the late 1960s Australia, my grandmother hand made a dress in a glacial blue organza for my mother. Earlier this year, I was commissioned by Penny Greenhalgh to take her portrait and to assist her to sink in to her femininity. I asked her to wear that same dress without a slip underneath. Challenging her to be both provocative and vulnerable at the same time. With strong direction, her entire demeanour transformed and a stunning revelation emerged. We all have parts of us that can be tucked away until a moment arrives to us permission to release it.
Le fil d'Ariane is a collection of new works is a tribute to women of inspiration. The golden thread of the Greek myth of Ariadne represents a through line of the unfolding development of the self. A guide for the path ahead that is not seen though can reveal a true need that has been left dormant.

ARTIST STATEMENT
How you feel about yourself determines who you are and what you do. To be brave enough to show vulnerability and real strength is to love yourself. When I practice portraiture I ask my subjects questions that challenge them to tell the truth in a beautiful way. I then give them a space that is safe to move freely and to express themselves without judgement. What I want is for them to feel beautiful in a way they may not have felt before. The journey to this can be very difficult and emotional. The portrait becomes a piece of evidence of the session that is in itself the work. Everyone has inside of them a princess, a king, a monster, an idiot and a hero. When we have fun pretending to be these characters we access part of ourselves that has been there all along. Dance and movement free up the body to express itself in ways that words cannot. Truth comes through movement and release of expression. Through dance I access the soul and through acting I provoke the mind.
"We lie, we lie to others and we lie to ourselves.
Revealing our secrets can release our strength and unveil our beauty."
